In the modern era, the Product Development Cycle is fast shrinking, demanding faster New Product Development cycle unlike that in the previous years where the development engineers enjoyed very long lead time for developing new products. The need for developing new products with zero defects at the time of launch is increasing due to intense competition.

The above requirement necessitates careful planning for quality right at the drawing board stage which will prevent the customer from being used a guinea pig for debugging the design errors. These developments enhance the competency requirements of the designers who otherwise merely focus on technical competency & are ignorant of the other aspects like quality of a successful product. So far, this has been a neglected area and improving the product introduction process by applying many quality planning tools is neither taught to them as a part of their academic education nor as a part of their training.

In addition to time & quality in design, most of the designers are also not accountable for the cost of the product since the cost is usually estimated post design stage. Hence, on launch, it often comes as a shock, when market does not see enough value for money for that new product.

In order to address the above issues, the product introduction process is built using many quality tools which the designer is supposed to apply to get First-Time-Right (FTR), on time and cost-effective new product design. Most of these are conceptual tools which have got the power to achieve the company’s objective to successfully market the new product.

DFSS is aimed to apply end-to-end new product development systems that will reduce the lead time and cost of new products of Six Sigma quality. DFSS is a robust framework of 4 phases namely Identify-Design-Optimize-Verify (IDOV) with stage-wise gate reviews.


SDDP is a training package that aims to orient the senior designers to use analytical tools such as DFMA, Benchmarking, QFD, FMEA, Tolerance Design, Reliability, etc to improve the quality of product development. With SDDP, Senior Designers will be able to design & develop First Time Right new products within the shortest lead time that meets & exceeds the customer expectations at the lowest cost.


Often fresh engineers, with limited exposure to design and manufacturing background, are inducted into design departments. The lead time for developing and training them is very long and often the mistakes committed by them cost heavily to the organization. PDDP is a training package which aims to train the young engineers to learn design concepts and manufacturing guidelines. With PDDP, the Product Designers will be able to design the machine elements covered in this course with minimum inputs from the seniors, select suitable material, surface finish, heat treatment and tolerance and prepare the design documentation meeting the conventions & standards.
